BACKSTORY
The odds were against Mayu Iwatani becoming the Icon of Joshi Wrestling when she debuted in 2012. She was clumsy, stumbled over her words, seemed to be developing slower than the other women and was the last in her training class to record a win. Many other bright stars took the spotlight while Mayu worked hard in the background, becoming a fan favorite despite her initial setbacks. For all the hurdles that were in her path before, Mayu Iwatani has become one of the most decorated and accomplished women in the history of Joshi wrestling. Also one of the most loyal.
When other women - most notably Io Shirai and KAIRI - left for WWE, Mayu stayed in Japan and continued building her legacy at home. The few glimpses the rest of the world got of her during a brief international run in 2019 hinted at just how good the Icon is - she won the ROH Women's Championship, her first in the west. After that run she went back to business as the pillar of STARDOM - while the rest of the faces around her changed, Mayu was always there. Eventually the leadership changed, the roster turned over after a messy divorce from the founder, and Mayu was still there, doing her own thing. Something stirred in her, though, and she decided the time was right to finally make her move.
