EBWF Salaries

Shocking news out of EBWF today that confirms the departure of The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins), Cody Rhodes, A.J. Lee & Kaitlyn. Also axed as of January 1, were 3MB (Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal & Drew McIntyre), Maryse, Paige, Ryback, Tyler Breeze, Nicole Matthews, Portia Perez, & Fandango.

The reasons for the departures of these talented entertainers are currently in question. Some reports have indicated that EBWF Chairman Wes Ikeda cut the roster in order to approve raises for John Cena, Randy Orton & Chris Jericho - but EBWF insiders say that could not be further from the truth. An anonymous insider said, “Cutting jobs to pay MORE money to people who do not need MORE money is not something Ikeda has, or ever will, subscribe to.”

Orton’s downside pay is slightly more than that of John Cena’s, but it is thought that that fact may be by design as Cena gets a higher cut of merchandise than Orton, and moves more merchandise than anyone in the company. Chris Jericho is the highest paid wrestler in EBWF. (Non-Wrestler? Someone help me out here.)

Ikeda has yet to comment on the departure of these superstars, many of whom were considered top tier. It seems crazy since Paige, AJ Lee and Maryse have all been women’s champion within the last year, and Paige and Maryse were both pushed heavily with their queen of the ring wins. And let’s not get started on how Wes Ikeda could possibly lose a talent like Dean Ambrose, the 2013 Royal Rumble winner and undisputed King of Summer who was a shoo in for 2014 EBWF Wrestler of the Year. It’s no secret that Cody Rhodes and Ikeda had their differences, but it seemed those issues had been put to rest and Rhodes was on his way to a remarkable winter, but now the face of the EBWF has completely changed.

Trent? is champion and probably in desperate need of a return to Barreta or at very least a rebranding. Randy Orton… where is Randy Orton? If rumors are to be believed, Ikeda, Jericho et. al. put the title on Trent? at Christmas Eve of Destruction in order to make Orton the Royal Rumble winner. Others say Chris Jericho might make a return to the ring in January, a more than welcome surprise. John Cena is on his way to beating his own record for longest IC Title Reign of all time, and his contract is set to expire at the end of April. EBWF insiders say a negotiation hasn’t even started yet. Wes Ikeda is said to be dealing with so many problems regarding company restructuring that he doesn’t seem to even be considering that Cena might walk away from the company. Interesting to note though that EBWF had plenty of time to plan a world tour in the doldrum time between Wrestlemania and King of the Ring, but instead shoved it in conveniently right before Cena could potentially announce a retirement. John Cena is arguably one of only four (and we’re including Wes Ikeda in that number) global superstars on the roster, and with his Hoganesque career, definitely the company’s highest draw overseas. Smart business move from Ikeda, considering that all signs from inside the EBWF point to John Cena’s new bride wanting him to hang up the boots so they can start a family.

It seems EBWF might be depending on Styles, Miz, Xavier Woods, Evan Bourne and Daniel Bryan as time marches on. What it intends to do with its floundering Women’s Division is anyone’s guess. It’s no secret that Wes Ikeda could do without Divas Wrestling, but he’s a business man who knows sex sells. He likes Mschif and Velvet Sky types far more than Eva Marie or the Bella Twins.

If I were booking the EBWF I’d keep it simple. We need more Edge. More Miz. More Styles. More Damien Sandow. EBWF lost a lot of great entertainers to kick off the new year, but they have tons more waiting in the wings. It will be fun to see how this crop rises to the occasion.
