The First Boss

It was a weird thing being a Canadian. Especially a Canadian who had lived in the United States for so long. Warfare was being held in Winnipeg, and Trish had been asked several times how she enjoyed being back “home”. Winnipeg was twenty hours from Toronto, it was hardly home. That was like a native Chicagoan visiting Salt Lake City, Utah and being asked what it was like to be in their hometown. Trish had arrived to Manitoba with her boyfriend, Nick Nemeth. She was proud of him, and he was being highly celebrated for his retention of the EBWF World Championship. She was happy for him. It said a lot that he was finally getting the kudos and attention he so richly deserved.
As for Trish, she’d been excited for the month of June and the Queen of the Ring tournament that accompanied it. Though she never got far in the brackets, and she knew her career was becoming more of a vessel to help younger talent, she felt good about the possibility of having a little more TV time. It was the first year in a long time the women’s tournament had not needed a bye, and Trish knew at least two of the girls had been left out of the brackets, so she was very excited to be included.
She was in the diva’s locker room, putting her hair in a pinned back French braid, preparing herself for her upcoming interview when she saw a text message on her phone. It was from one of the producers, and she rolled her eyes as she read it.
Are you sure you can’t think of any other way we might contact AJ?
Her ex-boyfriend, and most spectacular failure to date, had apparently taken some sort of leave of absence that had lasted longer than the EBWF brass had wanted, and now they were trying to hunt him down. Trish didn’t even answer the text message. She’d already told them a million times that she didn’t want to be involved. She didn’t wish AJ any harm, but she couldn’t care anymore about where he was or what he was doing. She had to focus on herself. And the thing she loved most about Nick was that he really seemed to understand that. She was wearing her usual wrestling gear, black tights with patterned cut outs on the thighs, her “Trish” belt buckle and a pink crop top that tied up the front. Her wrestling boots padded against the concrete as she wandered out into the hallway, on her way to the room that had been set up to tape promos and segments. She’d been assigned to Michael Cole, and she was thankful for it, mostly because she thought Renee Young had been receiving far too much praise considering she was mediocre at best. She turned right down the hallway, following the paper arrows some poor intern had had to hang up. These areas all looked the same. She turned into the second door on her left and found a cameraman and Cole already waiting.
Michael Cole: Lovely as always to see you, Trish. Ready to get started.
Trish Stratus: I am. Plenty to do today, so let’s get this out of the way.
Michael Cole: Of course. I was wondering if you’d mind, I have a few questions I thought up but they might come off a little harsh. Mostly just about your chances in this tournament and your time away from the ring.
Trish Stratus: That’s fine, Mike. I’ve got an answer for everything.
Michael Cole: Great! Let’s get started then.
The cameraman signaled that he was ready, and Trish and Cole took their spots right in front of the EBWF logoed backdrop. The cameraman pointed in their direction as the red light came on signaling they were recording. [/color]
Michael Cole: Hello EBWF Universe! I am Michael Cole, beside me is EBWF Diva Trish Stratus…
Trish scoffed.
Trish Stratus: Cute, Michael. Cute. You want to try that again?
Michael Cole: Beside me is the legendary, Quintessential Diva, Trish Stratus…
Trish Stratus: Close, close… I’ll take it. What I was looking for was “beside me is the legendary, longest reigning EBWF Women’s Champion of all time, Trish Stratus.”
Michael Cole: Forgive me.
Trish gave a benevolent nod of her head, and Cole continued.
Michael Cole: The EBWF Queen of the Ring Tournament starts this evening, and will be in full swing. The brackets have been drawn and your first opponent is Becky Lynch. While you’ve been on the road with EBWF and participated in many non televised matches, it’s been awhile since we’ve seen you have a lot of success on EBWF Television. What are your thoughts on that and the Queen of the Ring Tournament?
Trish Stratus: There’s certainly something about the roar of a Warfare crowd, Michael. That’s just about the only difference between tonight and what I’ve been doing. I don’t need to have a lot of success on EBWF Television. I have a lot of success in my everyday life, and I am going to pull out all of the stops to make sure that I defeat Becky Lynch at Warfare.
Michael Cole: What does the Queen of the Ring tournament mean to you?
Trish Stratus: I think it’s pretty obvious that when it comes to being women’s champion, I am the Gold Standard. The Queen of the Ring tournament is my opportunity to get the chance to reclaim the EBWF Women’s Championship at Summerslam.
Michael Cole: How do you think you’d fare against Sasha Banks?
Trish Stratus: Sasha Banks is an interesting footnote in EBWF Diva’s History. She’s this really strange hybrid of Jillian Hall’s arrogance, Nicole Bass’ beauty, Kelly Kelly’s talent, and The Blossom Twins brains. I’ve been calling myself “The Boss” for years, hell, it’s right there in my entrance theme, but you know, if Sasha Banks wants to be a mash-up of everyone else, let her. I’m not that impressed, and it’s not like she’ll keep that title until August anyway.
Michael Cole: In order for all of that to happen, you’ll have to defeat Becky Lynch tonight in order to advance in the tournament. What can you tell us about Becky Lynch?
Trish Stratus: She’s had a couple of victories, hasn’t she? And she sames mighty sure of herself.
Trish smirked.
Trish Stratus: Becky Lynch stormed into EBWF about a month ago, and won a debut match against an unimpressive hack named, Lufisto. Lufisto didn’t even survive in EBWF. A cursory glance at our roster informs you that she’s not even employed here anymore. She didn’t have what it takes. Becky made her dissatisfaction at having to face a “nobody” very well known, but in a hilarious twist, was very upset a few weeks ago when she had to face Torrie Wilson and Velvet Sky.
Trish shook her head.
Trish Stratus: She must be thrilled about having to face me. Becky had the audacity to say that Torrie Wilson didn’t belong. That Torrie Wilson was taking up space, because she was a senior member of our roster. Becky Lynch better watch what she has to say in that regard, because I’m going to beat some respect into this girl. Women like Torrie Wilson, women like me, fought the authority of men in this place to make sure that women were well represented and now we’ve got an entire division with not just a championship, but women’s tag team championships too. You don’t tell senior members of this roster that they don’t belong to this club, because without us, there would be no club to belong to. I’m going to make sure that Becky Lynch gets that message, tonight.
Michael Cole: Becky Lynch is an Irishwoman, who seems to have a lot of fight in her, Trish. How are you going to get the job done for your Canadian counterparts tonight?
Trish Stratus: Now if I told you that, I might just lose the element of surprise, right? I don’t care if Becky Lynch is Irish, Scottish, British, Chinese, Japanese, Latina… to borrow a phrase from an old friend, it doesn’t matter. What Becky Lynch isn’t is better than Trish Stratus, and I think she needs a good kick to the face to help her out with that realization. She’s been walking around here with an awfully big head. It’s time for someone to knock her down a few pegs, and I’m just the woman to do it.
Michael Cole: If you beat Becky Lynch, you’re going to go on to face either Velvet Sky or Mighty Molly in the next round of Queen of the Ring, do you have anything to say about those possible opponents.
Trish Stratus: Not if I beat Becky Lynch, when I beat Becky Lynch. I make things happen Cole, but I’m not going to waste my breath, or the EBWF Universe’s time on talking about those two women right now. They’ll make short work of one another, and I’ll know soon enough who my opponent will be. For now, I’m focused on Step 1 of my plan to get to Summerslam, and that pit stop starts with defeating Becky Lynch. She wants to complain about Diva’s not having the total package. They don’t wrestle well enough. They focus only on their looks. Imagine her surprise when she gets kicked in the face, by the total package.
Michael Cole: The world will be tuning in. Thanks for your time. Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight, Trish Stratus takes on Becky Lynch in the first round of the Queen of the Ring tournament, you do not want to miss it!
The red light went off.
Cameraman: And we’re clear.
Trish Stratus: Thanks, Mike.
Michael Cole: Of course! Great work, Trish. It’s always nice to be able to interview someone who delivers such a flawless commentary. Thanks, and good luck tonight!
Trish gave a small, tight lipped smile and headed toward the door, back down the hallway. “Luck”, she wasn’t sure she had much more of it when it came to the EBWF brass, but she could hope. It was time to show them she was still serious, and not just fodder for women like Becky Lynch or Summer Rae. She went back to the diva’s locker room confident about her performance tonight. It was time to prove that she was still too good to be a punchline about taking up space. She’d paved the way, but the one thing these women had yet to learn was that the road was long, part of it uncharted, and Trish’s journey wasn’t over yet.
As for Trish, she’d been excited for the month of June and the Queen of the Ring tournament that accompanied it.
