The Bruiserweight Arrives

Post by Pete Dunne »

-==We are taken to a pre-recorded segment. An establishing shot shows us the exterior of an EBWF facility before the feed carries us inside, where a number of small rings and a full-scale gym are in full operation, filled with the young talent of the future who are mastering the various skills they will need to compete. Finally, the shot carries us to a savvy veteran of the industry, an old hand and one-time representative of the company's newest signee. The man we see is William Regal.==-

William Regal: "Who is Pete Dunne? What a positively delightful question. One that I, perhaps the most tenured villain in the history of this business, am more than happy to answer. You see: in today's world, there are many different kinds of men. There are evil men and good men. There are mad men and brilliant men. And then there are men like Pete Dunne; men who defy simple classification. See, men like Pete Dunne are neither evil nor good, mad nor brilliant. They exist in a place above such naive and simplistic labels, and identify with the mindset shared by only the greatest athletes and competitors in the history of this business. See, Pete is the kind of man that enters a business such as this one at an uncannily young age, spends years honing his talent, fights hundreds of matches before he has even marked his second decade on this Earth, and he does all of that because, well..."

-==William pauses. He inhales deeply and then exhales slowly. He stares directly at the camera, and with a look of sheer delight on his face, he continues.==-

"He does it all because he bloody well enjoys this. He enjoys the violence. He enjoys the brutality. He enjoys the cries of his enemies as he pummels them relentlessly in the ring: their groans of anguish as he locks in a submission hold, the thud of their bodies striking the canvas as he slams them. Pete Dunne is a fighter. He is a warrior. He is a bruiser. And he is among the most elite of all of those things. So, heed my warning, and heed it well: if you cross paths with Pete Dunne, you had best come ready to do battle, and you had best have a plan. Cheers."

-==Regal mimes as though he is tipping his cap, and then exits the frame. The feed cuts away now to more establishing shots of a seaside home before finally coming to rest on another veteran of the business: Fit Finlay.==-

Fit Finlay: "Who's Pete Dunne? Aye, that's a fine question, that. Let me tell you a little story about Pete Dunne. He's the kind o' arsehole who, while celebrating his birthday, likes to beat the piss out of others. He's the kind o' man who would sign on to fight on the anniversary of the day his mum brought him into this world just because he takes some sort of sadistic pleasure in beating on others. In North America, there's this notion among some people that men like Pete Dunne are "badasses," but really, men like him are better described as driven. Driven to do harm. Driven to destroy. And delighted to indulge in that drive."

-==Finally, the segment cuts away from the interviews to show footage of a grinning Dunne, standing menacingly in a room where is lit from below so his eyes are hidden behind a veil of shadow and only the harsh lines of his face are visible. Over this image, the words are superimposed:==-

THE BRUISERWEIGHT ARRIVES
WARFARE, 04/09/18

=============================================================

THE FONTAINE HOTEL
KANSAS CITY, MISS.
SUNDAY, APRIL 8, 2018

-==In front of the Fontaine, people mill about, including photographers and a handful of reporters for the local publications or industry magazines. The reporters are interspersed among a small crowd of fans as a taxicab pulls up, and as the door opens and a suited Pete Dunne steps out of it, the crowd surges forward slightly, calling on him for autographs and rapid-firing questions at him. Never one to shy from fame, Dunne obliges the fans who are seeking his signature while glaring at the reporters and photographers who are snapping his photo and spitting questions in his general direction. As he finishes with the last of the fans, Dunne looks straight at one of the cameramen and his accompanying reporter and nods in their direction, signalling that they have his attention.==-

Reporter: "Pete, the internet has been on fire with the news that you have signed a contract with the EBWF and that you are scheduled to compete in a match with none other than the deranged Jon Moxley. Can you confirm this news?"

-==Dunne's lip curls upward in a bit of a smirk as he looks at the reporter, then he shrugs.==-

Dunne: "All right. I'll answer your obvious questions. I'll indulge this nonsense with a minute of my time. I mean, I guess all of this has to go with the territory, doesn't it? If I sign a big deal with a big company, I'm going to have to deal with more cockroaches like yourselves. I guess I can indulge you. Yeah, I've signed with the EBWF. And yeah, I'll be meeting with Jon Moxley this coming week on Warfare in my debut match."

-==The reporter nods and with well-honed instincts, he moves right in with a classic follow-up question.==-

Reporter: "Pete, how do you plan for an unpredictable opponent such as Jon Moxley? Are you at all nervous about what is, ostensibly, the biggest opportunity of your career here, and the fact you're receiving it against such a wildcard?"

-==Dunne mutters something under his breath and the reporter opens his mouth to ask him to repeat it, but Pete raises a finger to his lips and hisses "shh," before he takes the recorder from the reporter and begins to speak directly into it as though it were a microphone.==-

Dunne: "Look, as far as I'm concerned, I can do what men like Jon Moxley do and I can talk up a good fight, or when we step into that ring with one another I can actually deliver on that talk. There's a reason I'm called the Bruiserweight. I didn't give that name to myself. It's because, while I may not be the prototypical steroid-raging big oaf folks are accustomed to seeing on their television screens, and while I may not be over six feet and may not be pushing 300 pounds, I am — pound for pound — the most vicious bastard you'll find on either side of the Atlantic Ocean. Now, Jon Moxley, I've never fought him before but what I can tell you is I've fought guys a lot like him. Guys who like to run about acting like they've got a few screws loose because it throws the audience off how ill-fitting they are for this line of work that I do. Men like Jon Moxley don't belong in self-respecting wrestling promotions, and at Warfare this week, I'm going to prove that point while making a statement for the world to see when I pick that pretend Lunatic apart and blow by blow, second by second that facade of his starts to drop and the world is exposed to just what he really is."

-==Pete pauses there, hands back the recorder and turns to grab a bag from the taxicab he has stepped out of now that he is, presumably, done with the press and the people for the day. But then the reporter decides to take his bait and asks the question begging to be asked.==-

Reporter: "And just what do you think Jon Moxley really is, Pete?"

-==Without missing a beat, Dunne looks straight into the reporter's eyes and his own narrow as he replies in an even and matter-of-fact tone.==-

Dunne: "A fraud. A pretender. A guy who's in over his head against competition he couldn't hope to defeat. As some of my mentors would have said, Jon Moxley's not fit to lace up my boots. He likes to talk about fighting but when push comes to shove he's going to fold like a poker player sitting on two-seven off suit. Men like Jon Moxley are made to be the first step on a better man's road to fame and glory, and that's exactly how I plan to use him this coming edition of Warfare: as my statement piece. Don't worry. It's all going to happen soon enough, and then I won't just be talking anymore. But for now, we're done."

-==With that, Pete Dunne pushes past the reporter, headed to his hotel room to get settled ahead of his big debut and the first step on the road to whatever his ambitions may be...==-

I love the Bruiserweight, and I love this RP. I particularly enjoyed the hype package at the beginning. Well done!
